His name was Frank Walts, and if you google it you'll come up with many powerful cover illustrations he created for magazines including The Crisis, The Liberator, Masses, and New Masses. Walts was a talented caricaturist and you could be his incarnation. To...Dear Elgin,
This is a letter of sincere thanks.
To my shame I have only just found you on ‘Youtube’ and what a joyous revelation I found you to be. Looking at your work, it is obvious you are in the forefront with your profession with your skill and ideas, but more than this, your whole attitude shows what a kind and generous man you are, not only to share your great knowledge, but the time taken to producing these great videos. I think every genuine artist inwardly knows, we are on a never ending learning curve, but we get someone like you who comes along and straightens the road for us a little, or a lot.
I have been drawing for almost eighty years and it still amazes me, how sometimes, I can, so easily get it wrong. My biggest problem is nerves and unsteady hands, but my mahl stick helps me through this a lot. I am a portrait artist with a loose impressionistic style and have always admired great caricaturists like yourself, even drawn quite a few too, but no way up to your standard and I must tell you, that since seeing your videos, I am now, thanks to you, trying to improve on this and pick up more work as ‘another string to my bow’.
Elgin, I could go on praising you all night, but then I would not have any time left to see more of your videos, so I would like to end by saying a very big thank you and God Bless You and the work you do.
Sincerely,
Daniel McGowan
Portrait Artist
Author ‘Why Measure?’ (The 10 Day Portrait Drawing Crash Course)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04677017717390499952noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34972514.post-10709326596938583572015-03-26T08:29:45.585-07:002015-03-26T08:29:45.585-07:00Watched all your vids on youtube,in awe of your ea...Watched all your vids on youtube,in awe of your easy drawing technique.I like your banter flowing easily and very informative. Your work is amazing and even with 11 years in the field I still get tons of new tips and ideas from you. I have an iPad and Art Studio for doing caricature gigs as well, however I've had my eye on the surface pro after trying it out a couple times at the local Microsoft store. From what I saw I didn't see Fresh Paint working well for color caricatures as I didn't see an option for layers when I was playing around with it, but I could see Photoshop on the Surface Pro as a good combination. In your opinion since you've done live work with both, which would you prefer? I have a hang up with Artstudio as it likes to crash before I can finish a drawing sometimes, usually a few times during a gig forcing me to start the drawing over. I drew these as
an after thought many days after the job ended. My intention was to show my appreciation in a tangible way to the staff members for assisting me with a great job, NOT to demonstrate the superiority of Apple products and rub it in their faces. That would be stupid, and Ive been a professional too many years to be stupid.to
My reason for using the Ipad and the Art Studio software to draw these gift caricatures is simple: I don't have Surface Pro or Fresh Paint. I used what I had to draw the gift. Simple as that. Had I not had the Ipad I probably would've done it with pen and ink scanned the drawings and sent them off in an email.

I've done this for other clients also, so this isn't unusual for me o do

Bottom line is that I drew this on my own time. My intention has NEVER been to be disrespectful to a paying client. Ive updated my original post to prevent someone else from getting the same wrong opinion of me. Thanks for bringing ti to my attention. I agree that the original wording of it made me seem like a bit of an insensitive jerk.
