Hi Elgin,
You might find it interesting to know that starting around 1910 an African-American artist traversed the streets of New York with pen and sketchpad in hand looking for subjects to draw. His name was Frank Walts, and if you google it you'll come up with many powerful cover illustrations he created for magazines including The Crisis, The Liberator, Masses, and New Masses. Walts was a talented caricaturist and you could be his incarnation. If he were better known, people might not be surprised to learn that an African-American was doing your kind of work over a century ago.
